... musique brute, the name of the group, makes reference to Art Brut, that unspoiled "raw" art that already fascinated the painter Jean Dubuffet in the middle of the last century. It is amateur art by outsiders and auto didactics, who find artistic expression beyond, and independent of, the academies. This comparison is only partly true of musique brute and an analogy is certainly not intended. The players in musique brute are
well-versed in the diffrent styles and traditions of composed and improvised art. But they don't - and thus the reference to art brut - want their music assigned to any school. They seek freedom from the methodical constraints of well-known or well-trodden paths. ...
